We are pleased to host Domenico Andrea Schiuma, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milan, Italy. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences (Political Science track) from the University of Genoa. His research interests include political participation, participatory and deliberative democracy, public opinion, and political parties, explored through a comparative approach. Methodologically, he is particularly engaged with qualitative and mixed methods, employing interviews and Qualitative Comparative Analysis in his research.
About the Talk
Social sciences have for decades been characterized by a divide between qualitative and quantitative approaches. Methodological debate concerning the strengths and weaknesses of each remains lively. Yet attempts to combine both approaches within the same research design have become increasingly common, alongside efforts to develop new methods that draw on the strengths of each tradition.
One such method, gaining popularity over the last thirty years, is Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), invented by Professor Charles Ragin and introduced in his 1987 book The Comparative Method: Moving Beyond Qualitative and Quantitative Strategies. This seminar traces the history, foundations, and functioning of the method.
